Top 10 Most Underrated Korean Dramas of 2024!

Writer: YoonYoon

While some K-dramas get all the limelight with tired, and boring plots, hidden gems often slip through the cracks. 2024 was no different—filled with brilliant dramas that quietly shined in the shadows, deserving far more recognition than they got. So I thought I would put together a list today, talking all about the Top 10 Most Underrated Korean Dramas of 2024!

Kicking off the list is The Players 2.

Now, if you’re into intense crime thrillers mixed with clever heists, this one should’ve been on your radar. The Players 2 takes things to a whole new level, with an intriguing plot full of twists and turns. The characters, who you would think are just your typical badasses, are so much more complex than that. Each member of the team has their own backstory, motivations, and hidden layers that unfold as the episodes progress. It's this depth that really sets it apart from the usual crime drama fare. The pacing is on point, never dragging or overstaying its welcome, and it always keeps you guessing. With its thrilling action sequences, comical touch, and charismatic cast including Song Seung-heon, Jang Gyu-Ri, and Oh Yeon-su, Player 2 solidifies its place as a standout in this genre.

Next up on the list is Your Honor, and let me tell you, this one will have your brain spinning! It’s a legal thriller that’s all about tough choices, family loyalty, and some seriously dark twists. The story kicks off with a judge who’s shocked to discover his son has committed murder, and instead of doing the right thing, he decides to cover it up. But here’s where it gets wild—this cover-up drags him into a deadly game with a notorious crime boss, who’s hunting for his son’s killer. The tension in this one is insane, and the plot keeps throwing curveballs at you! Without giving too much away, let’s just say that the ending will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about justice and revenge. If you love a good moral dilemma and plot twists that hit you when you least expect it, Your Honor is definitely a hidden gem you can’t miss!

Another thriller on the list is The Bequeathed.

The Bequeathed is a haunting crime thriller that doesn't just pull you into its eerie setting but forces you to confront the dark corners of human obsession and grief. Set in a remote backcountry, the drama revolves around a series of murders connected to ancient burial traditions. It's slow-paced, but every moment feels necessary to unravel the twisted emotions and secrets the characters harbor. With only six episodes, The Bequeathed does an impressive job of introducing an array of vivid, multi-dimensional characters—each one leaving their mark on the story. What starts off bleak and suffocating slowly opens up towards the end, but not without lingering in the shadows of the supernatural and unspoken truths. While The Bequeathed is far from perfect, it still delivers a gripping, suspenseful experience with its strong character-driven narrative.

And coming in strong on our list is Wedding Impossible, a rom-com that truly lives up to its name by flipping the script on K-drama tropes in ways you won’t see coming.  It follows a damsel-in-distress actress who enters a fake marriage with her friend to hide a secret from his family, but complications arise when his younger brother becomes involved, making for a complex love triangle; it's often praised for its fresh storyline and strong chemistry between the leads, despite not receiving as much mainstream attention as other dramas in the same period. One of the most common praises about this show is that while it contains a lot of K-drama cliches (like a guy and a girl entering into a contract marriage, or a rich guy falling in love with a poor girl), it somehow makes them seem funny and entertaining and not cringey. If you haven’t watched it yet, trust me, it’s more than a sentimental trinket.

Adding a fresh concept to the list, Blood Free.

Blood Free marks a compelling departure from conventional K-drama narratives, introducing audiences to a captivating new genre known as "The Blood-Free Drama." This innovative approach, offers viewers a refreshing alternative to the typical bloodshed and violence often associated with the genre. Instead, the focus is on nuanced storytelling and character-driven narratives, setting a new standard for K-drama excellence. The thing about blood free is that the story pulls you in once you get accustomed to the futuristic world. The show does a good job of making it realistic like you can easily follow along though they are talking about hifi tech and we can envision this could be possible. Must watch if you want a unique plot that explores one of the rarest k-drama genres ever.

Also a romcom, Branding in Seongsu, is another underrated Korean Drama from 2024. Branding in Seongsu is a decent show to watch which has a mix of romance, drama, and commentary on the modern spirit of entrepreneurship. It is a relationship-reversal romantic thriller set in the branding mecca of Seongsu-dong that follows the soul-swapping story of Kang Na-eon, a tough marketing team leader, and So Eun-ho, a flirtatious intern. Branding in Seongsu might’ve had ups and downs, but it gave us a full circle in terms of plot, chemistry between the leads, and drama, which is something to be grateful for. It stands out because it shows how hard it is for young entrepreneurs. The show does a decent job of balancing business-related details with personal ones. This makes the characters’ professional wins and losses feel real.

A standout mention on the list is Blackout. Black Out is a classic K-drama thriller that captivates from start to finish. The story revolves around a man who is falsely accused of murdering two of his friends. Despite his claims of innocence and a lack of memory regarding the events, the evidence leads to his conviction, resulting in a ten-year prison sentence. Upon his release, he faces the harsh negativity and suspicion from the people in his village, which drives him to seek the truth and clear his name. What stands out about 'Black Out' is its exceptional writing. It skillfully combines intense thrills with emotional depth, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats while also tugging at their heartstrings. The narrative unfolds gradually, revealing critical information piece by piece, which only heightens the excitement as the story progresses. The pacing of the story is decent—not too rushed and not too slow—allowing everything to be revealed without leaving anything out.

Moving on, We have the “Pyramid Game.” Based on a webtoon of the same name, Pyramid Game is a drama that proves the most compelling stories often lurk in the shadows. While it’s easy to draw comparisons to Squid Game, Pyramid Game steps out of its shadow with a chilling, chess-like strategy of its own. It follows transfer student Sung Su-ji navigating the high-stakes environment of Baekhyun Girls' High School, where the sinister Pyramid Game dictates a hierarchy based on votes—and the consequences of falling to the bottom are nothing short of brutal. With characters who blur the lines between hero and villain, this drama will leave you questioning everyone's motives. Just when you think you've figured out the game, an unexpected alliance flips the board entirely—watch closely, because the most innocent faces may hide the sharpest daggers.

For fans of noona romance, Midnight Romance in Hagwon, is a notable mention on the list. The Midnight Romance in Hagwon is a melodramatic romance K-drama that tells the story of the romance between Seo Hye-jin, an expert lecturer at a private academy known as "hagwon", and Lee Jun-ho, a former student who returns to the academy as a lecturer. With the high-stakes and competitive setting of the South Korean academic world, The Midnight Romance in Hagwon manages to balance the romance with a thrilling workplace drama. The show is filled with rivalry among the lecturers, a high-pressure competitive environment for both lecturers and students and drama caused by the passionate secret romance between the leads. The show's interesting setting and compelling academic drama make the romance K-drama a thrilling ride.

And Finally, We have “Perfect Family.” This suspense thriller is a masterclass in storytelling, weaving together tragedy, guilt, and the stark contrasts of two lives—one of abundance and one of despair. Written in reverse chronology, the drama opens with a shocking scene that leaves you questioning every character's motives from the start. And as the story peels back layer by layer, you're left wondering: whose life really belongs to whom? With a stellar cast, including Kim Min-ju and Kim Young-dae of Forbidden Marriage fame, this drama packs emotional punches and jaw-dropping twists. If you like weird and wonderful stories, psychological thrillers, well crafted storylines with complexity and tension: this one is for you.
